A little care makes room for a better glow. A trimmed wick, a safe spot, and time to enjoy the moment help your candle burn beautifully.
Always follow your candle’s safety label, including any shorter burn-time limit.
Before you light
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each burn, once the wax is cool. Clear away wick trimmings, matches, and other debris.
- Find a safe spot: a stable, level, heat-resistant surface, at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. Keep lit candles at least 3 inches apart.
- Keep it clear of children, pets, table edges, and drafts. Remove the lid before lighting, and keep hair and loose clothing away from the flame.
- Check the jar. Never burn a candle in a cracked or chipped vessel.
Enjoy a steady glow
Give the wax time to melt gradually into an even pool. Frequent, very short burns can leave wax around the sides. A little leftover wax is normal; you don’t need to melt every edge.
- Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time. Follow a shorter limit if your candle’s label gives one. Never burn longer just to melt the edges.
- Stay nearby. Keep the candle in sight and extinguish it before leaving the room, going to bed, or feeling drowsy. Avoid burning in bedrooms, bathrooms, and sleeping areas.
- Let it stay put. Never touch or move a burning candle or a jar with liquid wax. Use a well-ventilated space away from fans and vents, and never add oils, flowers, or other materials to the wax.
Leave the last ½ inch of wax. Stop burning at that point; never burn the jar empty or relight an exposed wick tab. Never extinguish with water.
For wickless candles
Warm, never light. Use only a warmer designed for your candle’s vessel and follow both products’ instructions and time limits. Keep it on a heat-resistant surface, clear of children, pets, and flammable materials. Never leave it operating unattended or handle hot wax or a warm vessel.
